Ernakulam (Cochin), one of the most famous cities of Kerala

The commercial capital and the cosmopolitan capital city of Kerala is Kochi or Cochin in Ernakulam. Primarily because of its location it is also known as queen of the Arabian Sea, but this is not only because of its location; in addition to this it is also one of the finest natural harbours in the world. Ernakulam was once a major commerce and trade centre of the world and it was indulged with for the same with a few of the major countries like Britain, China and Portugal.

Since it was such an important trade centre of the world time and again efforts have been put in to make this place accessible by rail, road and air. To pursue this goal an international Airport has been made at about 20 kilometres from town at Nedumbassery. Ernakulam is a major station in southern railway and concomitantly an excellent road network has been laid around this place. Apart from this, ferry service is also quite popular in Cochin.
There are many places that often have been successful in attracting the visitors, tourists and travellers. The ones that would top the list are Fort Kochi, St. Francis church and the Dutch Palace. The contributions of people from several different countries like British and the Dutch have contributed in the development of this city. Similarly the Portuguese and the French have also left their mark through the St Francais Church built in 1503; this is the oldest European church in India. It was initially built of timber but later on was restored with stone masonry. Another prime contribution of the Portuguese is the Dutch Palace built in 1557; it was gifted to Raja Veera Keral Varma of Kochi and was restored by the Dutch in the year of 1663. Over here one could give themselves a treat of the murals depicting scenes of the Hindu mythological epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Such is the prominence of Ernakulam (Cochin) and its power and beauty could be felt in a better fashion only by visiting this place.
